ABOUT PERU Peru has over 1600 miles (2,680 km) of coastline along the Pacific Ocean. The capital city, Lima, is located on the central coast in the Rimac Valley and is the countrys economic hub. Its principal beaches are El Silencio, Punta Hermosa and San Bartolo. The Lurin Valley, South of Lima, contains Pachamac. This archeological zone has ancient temples to the Sun and Moon. Lake Titicaca, located in Southwest Peru near Puno, is the highest navigable body of water in the world. Man-made islands, constructed of reeds, are one of the many interesting things to see. Cuzco, located high in the Andes mountains, is the base for exploration of the heart of the Inca Empire. Both the ancient city of Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail are nearby. The Amazon Jungle is one of the most important areas in the world. The best place to understand the secrets of the jungle is the Mann Biosphere Reserve. The Southern coast of Peru is the home of the mysterious Nazca Lines. While some people speculate that these lines were used as a sort of agricultural calendar, others believe that they were used to communicate with ancient alien cultures. You can fly over them and decide for yourself. Near Huaraz, high in the Andes, is Huascaran National Park. Visitors can hike among mountains, glaciers, and pre-Columbian ruins. In Trujillo, you can visit Chan Chan, the largest adobe citadel in the world. The bustling city of Chiclayo is the jumping-off point for visits to the archeological zone of Huaca Rajada, the tomb of the Lord of Sipan and the Valley of the Pyramids. Neighboring Bolivia is the home of the Golden Triangle, a region of beautiful high-altitude scenery and villages. To the north in Ecuador are the Galapagos Islands, which have been declared a UNESCO Natural World Heritage site. Discover these Enchanted Islands on our comfortable and luxurious ships during a 5 day/4 night cruise.
